Let's all give a round of applause (5.00 / 2) (#5)

for the Panzer Pope!

Should people be afraid of this? (5.00 / 3) (#7)
by m0rk on Wed Apr 20, 2005 at 12:43:43 PM GMT

Does this mean that we are integrating Germany in to the Catholic Church to help guide world leaders closer to their goals of irradicating the world of these things they call "evil"?

When I see all those men in funky hats, I think of the KKK, because it looked like a huge freaking Race Rally!!!

I realize we have multinational individuals in high church places, but doesn't it just make you stop and think for a second? By that, I mean, the KKK must be taking wardrobe fashion tips from the worlds largest recognized religion!!!

We've had a German Pope before - just a long, long ass time ago.  Even the Jews seem willing to give the Panzer Pope the benefit of the doubt, which really suprises me since he was a memeber of the Hitler Youth, though he claims he wasn't given a choice about that. As a 'liberal' Catholic, I find the choice dismaying. I had said several times that day, 'Anyone buy Ratzinger'. Imagine my shock.

The Hitler Youth thing (5.00 / 3) (#9)
by xxxxxxxxxx on Wed Apr 20, 2005 at 05:23:22 PM GMT

is what got me.  I really don't buy that he had no choice........I think he was afraid, but no choice, no, he had a choice.

I think the church has taken 100 steps backward in this, especially with the strides JP made with the healing of the relationship with the Jews.  I think this Pope might just set things back a bit, just in principle alone.

What amazes me is that we seem to be heading toward a more conservative world in general and I am not so sure that is the best direction to go.

We have a family friend (5.00 / 4) (#13)
by Beef on Thu Apr 21, 2005 at 09:02:40 PM GMT

who grew up in Nazi Germany.  Her father was a party member, and she has a Hitler Youth background.  Hold it against her?  Not in the least.  She was a kid.  She didn't know better.  Same thing with Ratzinger.  The Jewish community is not lining up to take swings at him, and for good reason.

I say this as someone who's grandmother fled the country at age 13 with her two older brothers for fear of becoming a lampshade.

yes, I understand where (5.00 / 2) (#17)
by xxxxxxxxxx on Sun Apr 24, 2005 at 12:59:56 PM GMT

you are coming from.  I have two freinds whose mother spent years in a concentration camp.........she was Polish.  She does not hate anyone..or even hold it against anyone what happened.  She just misses her family members that did not survive.

There is something to the thing where the people were afraid and did go along with things, that is a normal thing......but they always have a choice, don't deny that.  Fear makes us go along with a lot of things we normally would not.  Never underestimate the power or wanting to survive.  But they did have a choice, many made the opposite choice, and no, they are not around to tell you about it, but they did try to make a difference and did get many Jews out of the country to safety before they themselves perished for doing so.

When it comes to a Pope, I believe he should be without anything like that in his past, he is supposed to be the leader, no stain or tarnish.  How can you lead if you have always been a follower out of fear???

Just remember (5.00 / 2) (#10)
by MFS on Thu Apr 21, 2005 at 08:48:15 PM GMT

that Ratzinger is basically there to finish the work of JP2 - he's like a closer in baseball... he's not expected to last a long time, and he's openly admitted this.

Will we see a schism - the Catholic church fracturing yet again? Or will Ratzinger just finish out JP2's unfinished business and the next pope will be a younger and fresher leader who might be better able to take a more liberal stance... I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

The big thing that JP2 didn't do.... (5.00 / 2) (#14)

...and regretted, was to be able to make peace with the Orthodox Church in Russia.  He always wanted to be able to visit the former Soviet Union (and China, but that's a different story).

"He also appears interested in picking up where John Paul left off with efforts to end the nearly 1,000-year estrangement with Orthodox churches, which broke with the Roman church over papal authority and disputes about the liturgy. One of the late pope's unfulfilled dreams was to visit Russia, the most populous Orthodox nation."

End the Eastern Schism? (5.00 / 1) (#15)
by Vladinator on Fri Apr 22, 2005 at 07:37:14 AM GMT

Not going to happen. Unless they lose their ego, and admit that the "first amongst equals" did NOT move with the seat of the Roman Empire, best of luck. I'm amazed that we still consider them Catholic, given how much they dislike Roman Catholics.

if by "unfinished" they mean "things that stood no chance of happening, short of Jesus himself returning and comencing to layth the smackth down", then I guess so.

I did find this: (none / 0) (#3)
by Beef on Tue Apr 19, 2005 at 11:09:47 AM GMT

http://www.dreamscape.com/morgana/popes.htm

I think NfT is thinking of a prophecy by someone else (can't remember, 16th century or something) that had a list of all of the popes. I think Benny 16 is supposed to be the second to last one.

Benny XVI: Oh, I'm afraid the Holy See will be quite operational when my death arrives...

The prophecies of St Malachy (5.00 / 1) (#4)
by Bold Marauder on Tue Apr 19, 2005 at 01:14:45 PM GMT

Who allegedly passed them on in the 11th century, though they weren't discovered until the 15th century.

A brief article and a chart of the popes and where they fit can be found here.
