Hurricane Survival Tip #42

Diary

My grandparents live in Bradenton, FL, on the south side of Tampa Bay (the water body, not the city).

Hearing that Frances was coming, on Monday morning they went to the community center (they live in a trailer in some little retirement community) to wait out the weather.  Well, of course, it rained and gusted, etc.

Then the wind and rain stopped, and everything got really calm.  So they went home.

Well, of course, later that night, the other side of the eye hit them.  I'm told that the wind woke them up, sleeping in their little double-wide.

Luckily, they didn't have any damage, and everyone was all right.  Grandma claims "God protects the ignorant."  Given how long she's lived so far, it must be true.

Lesson:  When it suddenly gets really calm after waiting out a hurricane, make sure you're not in the eye.

She may get another chance.......... (none / 0) (#3)

at this because it looks like Ivan is heading that way and is a category 5 which is worse than the other 2.

I truly worry about the people there, especially older ones.  Children too, because they don't listen either!!!!!!

It is good to know she is ok, but I hope she is battening down the hatches for this next one and stays put til its over!!

I am a bit worried about this one as it may cause us more problems too here in Virginia.  The last one flooded Richmond heavily and that is unusual so with another heavier storm, we could get worse than flooding this time.  We have had our share of Tornadoes lately as well, something else we don't usually have.  Having respect for the weather is something I learned early in life.  You just don't take chances when its not necessary.

looks like it's heading into the Gulf. (5.00 / 1) (#4)

Which is good for Grandma, but bad for other people.  I'm kinda worried about N'Orleans.  The enitre city is below sea level, and they WILL have flooding.  The question is only how much.

This means that all the dead will float around for a while (they can't bury their dead there you know, its all done above ground with vaults and the such).  It has happened before.

My husbands family is from that area and I am worried about them, but hopefully they will evacuate if it looks really bad.

Weather Channel? (none / 0) (#1)

Wouldn't someone at the shelter have said something?  I thought there are supposed to be info networks and stuff setup...or something.  Or even just the weather channel playing on some TV somewhere.

Dunno!

Maybe they didn't have power, or reception or something.

However, knowing Grandma, it wouldn't have mattered what they said.  She gets it into her head that she's going to do something, and you can't talk her out of it.  Anyway, if it's in any way vaguely related to science, she doesn't understand it.
