Windows Source Stolen! Open Source Terrorists Responsible?

I have just read this article in the underground "hacker" web-site slashdot. It appears as though the source code -those instructions which tell a computer how to do its' job- to the Microsoft Windows family of software products may have been stolen!

dividing image

Almost one year to the date that SCO has gone on the  offensive against IP criminals and "free" software leeches, it appears that an as-yet-unknown criminal element has managed to steal the source code to several industry-leading operating system from Microsoft.

Unfortunately, at this time there is only one other source for this story, so it cannot wholly be considered 'legitimate' (even by the loose standards of journalism embaraced by the slashdot commune).

Even with this scant knowlege I -along with every other law abiding citizen- are left to ask ourselves some hard questions.

Which of the so-called "open-source projects" would benefit the most from this brazen theft the most -and who is the most likely culprit?

Is this action related to the IP-leakage from the SCO group, or is it a seperate, unrelated act of intellectual terror?

How far are the GNU/Terrorists willing to take their perverse agenda? Do we need to further beef up the resources to our Department Of Homeland Security?

If there is one silver lining in this debacle, it is this: with the legal tools at Microsoft's disposal, rooting out the patent-infringing technologies in various "open source" splinter projects (samba, wine, etc) should be trivial and inside of five years, this whole "giving away the family secrets" foolishness should be behind us -for once and for all.

Seriously... (5.00 / 2) (#3)
by Beef on Fri Feb 13, 2004 at 03:27:58 PM GMT

Microsoft commented that "hackers" will be able to find security holes in NT and 2000 and exploit them.  So, are they basically saying that a bunch of random "hackers" are better at finding bad code than their own army of elite developers developers developers developers?

And NT has been out now for, what, EIGHT years?  There are still holes to be found in their code after EIGHT years???

If MS's faith in itself is that low, how bad must things really be?

The thing that gets to me the most is thant Microsponge claims that this will allow "hackers" to find and exploit more vunerabilities (apparently there are still more than have already been discovered.  Impressive in and of itself that so many problems can be found in such a relatively small bit of code.)

<sarcasm>We all know how open source makes things insecure.  Look at the Linux and BSD distros.  They're absolutely plagued by viruses (virii?), hackers constantly trying to find ways through a plethora of open ports, and the lack of centralization makes it impossible for anyone to get patches.  It's a wonder such a concept has lasted at all.</sarcasm>

Who's dead now?

Well, naturally I can't blame Microsoft (5.00 / 3) (#4)

One of the great truisms is that the more complex something is, the more prone it is to failure. Rumour has it that this compressed, 200mb file only holds something like 15% of the windows source code.

In comparision, the entire source code for 4.4BSD weighs in at 17mb compressed.

If OpenBSD has been unable to fully secure itself in 7 years -even with endless security audits, then it's no wonder that Microsoft -using a codebase of hundreds if not thousands of megabytes- would have justifyable fears of "exploits".

After all, the more complex a structure is, the more prone it is to failure.

only 15% (5.00 / 1) (#5)

that's a high figure considering how many viruses and worms have been written with prior access to much smaller percentages (if even measurable). oh and 200mb vs 17mb means there's a lot of bloat going on becasue it sure isn't quality code they're loading you up with.

One man's bloat is another's Emacs (5.00 / 1) (#6)

But any way you slice it, it's still a good amount of complexity, with many, many points-of-failure waiting to be exploited.

How do you know its not a bunch of Mac Zealots? Like a gang of Hacker Anime Art Fags or some thing.

So apple keeps its' Zealouts under a tight reign. However, with the diminishing popularity of pokemon and other "japanamation" making it harder for the Art Fags to pick up young boys, they may well be behind this --though I don't see what they'd gain from it.
