Will it be any good? (5.00 / 1) (#1)
by Vladinator on Mon Nov 29, 2004 at 07:24:52 AM GMT

Or will it be another XFL / USFL debaucle?

Depends on when the NHL gets a CBA (5.00 / 1) (#2)
by Beef on Mon Nov 29, 2004 at 09:53:49 AM GMT

If the CBA is reached in 2004, the WHA will suck.

If the CBA is reached in 2005, the WHA will be ok for a year or so.

If the CBA is reached after 2005, the WHA will rox0r.

Perhaps. (none / 0) (#3)
by Vladinator on Mon Nov 29, 2004 at 09:55:54 AM GMT

I'm thinking that Hockey has to start in January one way or another, or it will stop being a pro sport in the US. Frankly, I think that if the NHL doesn't start playing by January, there will not be an NHL for 2005/2006.

It will be interesting to see (none / 0) (#4)

if NHL players will sign one-year contracts with the WHA just so that they can play somewhere.  Then we will have a Canada/Northern US league with cheap ticket prices, quality players, and better rules for a more exciting game.  What the NHL should have been all along.

If this comes to pass, the NHL ceases to be.  Or gets better.  Either way, only good can come out of this.

Ok..... (5.00 / 1) (#5)
by Reza on Mon Nov 29, 2004 at 10:28:29 AM GMT

In light of the comments posted here and some of the stuff I've read in the news...

Would it be such a BAD thing if the NHL went away?  ....esp if it was replaced with an organization that  *worked*?

Exactly. (none / 0) (#6)
by Vladinator on Mon Nov 29, 2004 at 10:35:36 AM GMT

While I would like to see the WHA take off, there are some things that the NHL has cornered the market on that we wouldn't see transition over, particularly Lord Stanley's Cup. If we could lose the NHL crapola and keep the history and tradition (and many/most of the same teams) I'm all for it.

Do we really need (5.00 / 1) (#7)
by Beef on Mon Nov 29, 2004 at 05:21:27 PM GMT

the Atlanta Fire Ant^W^W Thrashers?  Or the Tampa Bay Lightning-Rays?  Or the Anaheim Mighty Marketing Synnergies?

If you even just moved every team south of 36°30' to Europe, the NHL immediately improves 100%.

Depends. (none / 0) (#8)

I think we need to keep the semi-original 12 for example. What's hockey without the Wings or the Flyes?

Oh, I agree (5.00 / 1) (#9)
by Beef on Mon Nov 29, 2004 at 07:27:33 PM GMT

I think all of the 1967 12 are in the alignment I proposed in an earlier thread.

I also think they need to go back to Patrick/Adams/Norris/Smith.

What about playoff format? (none / 0) (#10)
by Vladinator on Tue Nov 30, 2004 at 09:46:51 AM GMT

Do you think it should remain best of 7/best of 7/best of 7/cup, or should it be best of 3/best of 5/best of 7/cup? I think playoffs are a bit too long.

5/7/Cup (5.00 / 1) (#11)
by Beef on Tue Nov 30, 2004 at 02:39:41 PM GMT

Division Finals / Conference Finals / Cup Finals.

So, (none / 0) (#12)
by Vladinator on Tue Nov 30, 2004 at 03:26:04 PM GMT

You see like what, 16 total teams? Everyone makes the playoffs? Or, what?

20-or-so teams (5.00 / 1) (#13)
by Beef on Tue Nov 30, 2004 at 03:43:55 PM GMT

8 make the playoffs.  2 from each division.
