What in the hell did this ass ever accomplish?

Whee, I'm Superman!

Uh oh, snapped my spine!  Watch me poop myself and bitch and moan!

Truly an American asswipe, indeed.

I'm a very pretty pony!

"What in the hell did this ass ever accomplish?"

He accomplished something quite proufound......he didn't give up in the face of something that pretty much was a death sentence.  He didn't stop trying to find a way to get better, he just plain didn't give up.

How many people do you know give up over small things and think its justifiable???

This is where it gets to be more spiritual than material because frankly, to be a person who represents some kind of hope or symbol of courage to others doesn't mean you win a Noble Peace Prize or you are the President of the United States, it means you touch them in a way that nobody else can and have some good effect on their feelings and behaviors.  I believe Christopher Reeve did that.  There are many paraplegics out there who looked at him as a source of courage and a symbol for not giving up and giving in.

We have become a nation of people who think you have to have some grand plan or glorious lifestyle to be something or somebody important.  That isn't the case.  I would have thought Mother Therese showed that in her lifetime quite well.

It isn't what you do, or how much you have, its how you do it............and how you choose to present yourself.

Robin Williams... (5.00 / 1) (#7)

...and Reeve were roommates at Julliard.  Now, THAT'S an unlikely pair!

It's reported that after the horse accident, Williams came into Reeve's hospital room in a blue scrub hat and yellow gown. "I'm a proctologist here to examine you," he said in a Russian accent, snapping his rubber gloves.
"For the first time after the accident, I laughed," Reeve said. "And with that, I knew I was going to be OK."

it makes sense in a way.......the handsome, leading man and the goofy, comedian (who happens to be somewhat of a genius) being freinds from college days.   Sounds like a good movie story to me. :-)

I knew about this when Reeve had his accident (here in Va by the way) and thought how lucky to have a freind like Robin Williams to make you laugh in the face of something so painful.  It took guts on both mens part to deal with it in their own unique way.

I applaud both of them for thier commitment to a freindship and to life.

for fighting his problems and doing so not just for himself but for others.

Looking at his early movies, you can hardly believe that same man was the one in the wheelchair, except for the eyes, they always had a gleam of hope and courage that far outshined the fact he was paralyzed.

I feel sorry for his wife and friends, they have lost a very sensitive and strong man in their lives but they will have his memory and his spirit always.

This one really is sad. (none / 0) (#2)

It hits me on two levels: as one who used to jump horses, and one who had someone very close to me suffer a spinal injury.

Also, kudos to the Today Show for exploiting a man's death to push a political agenda.

All we've posted about lately is who's dead now.

Someone, post something fun/goofy/etc.
In other news, my email service died.  Hope it will be resuscitated soon.  (Beef, the IMAP said I got a reply from you, but the server went down before the message was downloaded.  IMAP sucks sometimes.  Maybe I will take you up on a Gmail invite, given that fastmail may have ditched plaintext email composition.  I'm guessing this is the fastest way to get ahold of you.)

Who's dead now?

was more or less a propaganda film for embryonic stem-cell research.

...truly an American Icon.

Am I the only one who immediately thought of the South Park episode when I heard the news?

I did  and that and many things about the guy!

Perhaps that and Smallville will be what I remember most now about him.
