Wonder how your state fares in the Medical Care quality? This is from research done to see who has up to date medical care, class A Emergency Facilities and technology. If you are in the category 25 or below, you might start to check around to find the best place for medical care in your area.

In other words, if you are one of those who may be headed for a heart attack, well, make sure you don't live in Mississippi.

Some of this surprised me as I was always under the impression that the larger states had better funded medical care and more advanced technology. Seems that isn't always the case.

A complete list of rankings for each of the 26 procedures studied at almost 5,000 hospitals is available at www.healthgrades.com.

Here's how the 50 states and District of Columbia fared:

Rank  State
1        ND
2        FL
3        OH
4        MI
5        MD
6        CO
7        PA
8        CT
9        UT
10      SD
11      VA
12      MN
13      AZ
14      MT
15      NJ
16      ME
17      IL
18      RI
19      WA
20      IN
21      OR
22      DC
23      NH
24      ID
25      CA
26      MA
27      MO
28      LA
29      NC
30      TX
31      NM
32      NE
33      NY
34      KY
35      DE
36      NV
37      GA
38      WI
39      AK
40      IA
41      WV
42      SC
43      WY
44      HI
45      OK
46      VT
47      KS
48      TN
49      AR
50      AL
51      MS

Those who don't have health insurance know that in some instances, it doesn't matter where you live or how good the medical facilities are, you may or may not get seen or treated due to lack of insurance.

Second place, baby!

Only that shitty icebox North Dakota beats it.  No thanks, I'll keep second place and my nice warm winters, thank you.

And to think I moved from NY, which ranked 33rd.

just because I know what lousy health care is provided in Texas and also a few other places.

I live in Virginia and we have pretty good hospitals here and they also have an excellent one (University of Virginia Health Sciences Center) that is on top of current technology and procedures. They also treat you whether you have insurance or not and work with the population to help them get good medical care.

My state fails it. (5.00 / 3) (#4)

I don't get it... half the population of Wisconsin are nurses - including my grandmother (retired) and mother-in-law (part-time).

Methinks this is just yet another case of Milwaukee dragging down the rest of the state.

were both nurses too, and I know for a fact that nurses get treated poorly in a lot of places.  Their pay is not what it should be for the amount of time they spend in school and then doing floor duty training as well.  Nursing is a hard profession and does not get the respect that it should.

My thought is that its the administration of many hospitals that holds the strings to the kind of care you get.  They are the ones who hold the purse strings and do the employing so it all depends on how much money they are willing to spend on things, including technology, care givers etc.

Nursing (5.00 / 1) (#11)

I agree with this post wholeheartedly.

The nurses do everything these days.  The docs are just there so we have someone to sue should something go wrong.

Just another good reason to move to Ohio.  No wonder everyone is jacking me around in MO when I am sick.  Scary that is.

I didn't know you were in STL?!

I lived in the area for about 14 years.  Lived in the metro-east, but worked and played on the west side of the river.

Have a small Ted Drewe's Tiramisu concrete for me, please? :-)

I'm kinda surprised (5.00 / 2) (#1)
by MFS on Thu Sep 25, 2003 at 05:30:45 PM GMT

that Ohio is listed so high. I guess I should stop complaining about health care issues then...

Of course, Cincinnati would be the exception to the rest of the state.
