What they didn't understand was the Tiger was trying to get Roy out of the way of harm, or so it thought.
Roys partner, Sigfried, said that Roy slipped and the Tiger grabbed Roys arm in his mouth to steady him, something he had done many times. In his nervousness he clamped a bit hard and Roy hit him on the head with the microphone to make him let go. The audience began to stand up and scream and
yell and the Tiger panicked, grabbed Roy in the neck and drug him towards the back of the stage. HE was trying to get Roy out of harms way, or so he thought.
It took the stage hands and handlers use of a fire extinguisher to make the Tiger let go. Generally, when in a panic, a big cat will grab its young and carry it away from harm and will not let go until they are sure it is safe to do so.
Roy has made the statement to the doctors and those around him that the Tiger was not trying to harm him, he knew that.
At this point, Montecore, the Tiger in question is in quarantine at the hotel and will be taken back to their home and will probably not perform for a while. This has been stressful on the big cat.
Most of the Tigers and Lions that the duo use in their shows are ones that they have worked with since they were born. These cubs have been around the men and accept them as part of their family. It is not unusual for a big cat to become protective of humans if they have been raised by them. The only thing is, humans are more fragile physically than a Tiger or Lion, but the Tiger doesn't know that, he does exactly what he would do with another Tiger.
I am glad that Roy has stopped the idea that the Tiger should be put to death. White Tigers are becoming extinct and we should do what we can to preserve that line and not destroy it for being and doing what comes natural.
