Okay, so I have RH7.3 professional installed. (shut up, I don't want to hear it) Dual boot setup with Shitdows Windows 98 SE on the other drive.

Ummm, I subtracted one of my CDRs and now I get kernel panic at boot.

Why is it such a problem to remove hardware and not get some sort of kernel panic issue?

Can you help me?

Leave out the parts about killing my self or just runnning win2k or xp, because: a.) I'm too young to die, and b.) I'm not shelling out $150-200 for a new OS that I already can't stand to begin with.

So if any of you arrogant fuckers has a clue for me, feel free to post it!

Thanks in advance.

After careful analysis of this image, I have come to the conclusion that he is making a body suit, as seen in Silence of the Lambs.

Look carefully at that image for a second. Those eyebrows aren't inside of the odd skin. I highly doubt that this skin-mask is his peeling skin, or that it is synthetic. I believe that this is, indeed, someone elses skin and eyebrows.

After a bit of digging, I found out that this 45 year old once-black pop singer lives at a place called "Neverland Ranch." A petting zoo, basically. I have to think, using Hannibal as a reference, that he is feeding the unusable remains of some of his white female victims to the animals on this "Ranch."

Remember Nicole Brown Simpson? The white woman who O.J. Simpson was accused of killing? That murder fits M.J.'s M.O. IMHO.

What am I getting at here? O.J. is innocent, and Michael Jackson is making a body suit so that he can be a white woman.

You are either too helplessly retarded to post an error message, or I HBT.

There's your problem.  RH != Linux.  It == Red Shat.  Seriously.  Get a real Linux distro like Gentoo, Slackware, Debian or even Mandrake.

If you're running Grub as boot loader, boot into single luser mode "linux 1", mount your boot partition (make sure to mount it read/write).  Check the menu.lst file.

I'm not sure how Lilo does its conf.

That must be a feature... (5.00 / 1) (#4)

because Linux is so much better than Windows.  When ever I add or remove componets from my system, "Shitdows" never hiccups.  I am filling out a bug report right now and sending it directly to Micro$haft (or whatever you Linux ass-zealots are calling them now-a-days).

You can't subtract a CDR without using i, the sqrt(-1). The Linux kernel, being crap, can't handle complex numbers and panics.

I thought the rule was no sig changing.

your boot loader might be passing a parameter related to the absent hardware (e.g. hdd=ide-scsi). Not sure whether this would cause a kernel panic in the absence of /dev/hdd or not, but it's the only thing I can think of this early on a Saturday morning.

Good luck!

in a way. The problem is IDE 1 vs 2. I switched the cables because Linux couldn't find C. The boot sequence was seeing the drives as A and B, not C and D. Easily solved human error.

The kernel actually did not scoff at the absence of the CDR before or after I swapped the cables (yeah, I do read the scrolling messages, thanks skeptics!), so no problem there. Booted fine after wards. I did get asked if I wanted to disable a USB profile for a mouse that I had removed. I had a track ball mouse and a regular mouse hooked up to the same machine The track ball now sits on another machine.

The question of whether or not Linux is capable of recognizing hardware presence or absence is really not an issue any more. Unless you like to use software driven winmodems or other proprietary driver dependent hardware. Then that's what I refer to as stupidity.

Note: this box and all others I have had loaded with Linux have never had a problem seeing any PCI, AGP, or ISA card present. Because I chose the hardware carefully, and not blindly expecting the flashy box that the stupid piece of crap came in to represent the product inside. Except if you want to count my old US Robotics 56k POS winmodem.
