Wasn't he essentially the first celebrity to get into the news for smoking crack? (though at the time they called it 'freebasing')

First of all, Freebase is a process of inhaling cocaine by dissloving it in ether. Crack is a way of processing cocaine so that it can be smoked without the whole ether thing. Open flames around ether is dangerous, which is why people used to set themselves on fire freebasing. Crack is much safer. You get the "whole body orgasm" thing without the "setting the apartment on fire in your dopamine-induced haze" thing.

Second of all, even though his story was that he was freebasing, it was in fact a suicide attempt that caused him to burn himself.

You can take a little rock of cocaine, wrap it in a little tiny bit of weed, put it in a one-hitter, use 2 lighters, and suck as hard as you can.

If nothing else, the headrush from sucking so hard gets you high.
