I am interested....... (none / 0) (#5)

to see who is chosen to be Pope this time.  There is a chance it could be the man from Nigeria, who is African and that would be cool I think.  Also the one guy who is the youngest of all the Cardinals that has a possible chance, I think he is from Guatemala, but I might be wrong on that one, I do know he is Hispanic.

I think it is time for a change and we need someone who is in touch with the people as well as the Vatican and can reach out to modern ideas without totally throwing them out because they are too liberal for the church.

John Paul II (none / 0) (#6)
by Beef on Tue Apr 05, 2005 at 07:06:43 PM GMT

stacked the college with about 40 new Cardinals.  The next Pope will almost certainly be a conservative.

I think one issue at hand will be whether the Church wants to focus on Third World evangelism or secular European evangelism.  If they are looking to the Third World, Arinze (the Nigerian) would be a logical choice, and there are a few more conservative Papabili in Latin America as well (not that Latin America really needs a whole lot of Catholic evagelism).

Ratzinger would be the logical choice for a more European focus.

Stacked the college? (5.00 / 1) (#9)

ALl but THREE who can vote were put in position by JPII...and a total of 117 can vote.

And, if you think back (or Google back), Cardinal Wojtyla was not on the "Top 10" list of any betting parlor or newsman.  Anyone that goes behind those locked doors, could come out with the white robes.  Betting on this game is almost a sure loss.

Just my 2c.

that many?

Not surprising, I suppose, since he had been Pontiff for 26 years, and few Cardinals have that kind of life expectancy. I wouldn't expect that many to be left from Paul VI.

JPII was the third longest reigning Pope in the history of the Papecy. As such, it shouldn't be much of a suprise that he appointed that many Cardinals. Don't be suprised if the next Pope is not ultra conservative.

Father Guido Sarducci does have a chance to be POPE?

Seriously, I hope the new Pope is more liberal, it would make things better for the church as a whole I think.

JP2 was a likeable sort and I am sorry he was so ill and passed as he did.  Still, we all have to go sometime........and he was not young so I guess it is time to pass on the hat and go from there.

What I meant by the "40 new cardinals" is that I thought JPII expanded the college from 80 to 120.  Or something like that.  Not that he only appointed 40 cardinals.
